McDonald's coffee ranks high

Coffee snobs be warned: according to a survey outlined in the March issue of Consumer Reports magazine, McDonald's coffee was rated higher than Starbucks.

McDonald's coffee was "decent and moderately strong," while Starbucks' was "strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water," the magazine said.

McDonald's introduced coffee made from 100 percent Arabica beans, the kind used at Starbucks, a year ago.

The coffee from Starbucks, meanwhile, was determined to be "strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open."

The testers also ranked coffee from Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts, which claims to serve nearly a billion cups a year. Neither stood up to the competition, the magazine said.

Burger King's brew 'looked like coffee but tasted more like hot water,' the report states, while Dunkin's 'was inoffensive, but it had no oomph.'

McDonald's was not only the best tasting, but was also found to be the least expensive cup, the magazine said.

Yes! Finally, a bit of credit for this fast food purveyor's ability to bring good coffee to the masses at a fraction of the Starbucks' rate. Don't get me wrong -- I'm avoiding the chain's food these days, but before I gave up caffeine, I drank their coffee nearly every morning.

My husband really likes McDonald's coffee - which I couldn't believe because he always has good taste in coffee - maybe it really is good!

Carl's Jr has good coffee too, for being fast food.
Starbuck's is gross and always tastes burnt.
Diedrich (stores acquired by Starbuck's) & Coffee bean have good coffee too.

I too was impressed by McDonald's coffee, but I'd still say it's a far cry from Starbucks. Consumer Reports releases this report just about every year but they always fail to take one thing into consideration, the amount of different brews that Starbucks offers. Their Breakfast Blend and House (the ones most commonly tested) are, in my opinion, the worst they have to offer.

So, kudos to McDonald's for improving their coffee, but I doubt it'd rate better than everycoffee Starbucks has to offer.

McDonald's coffee would do in a pinch...My mom loves their Americanos but I ordered a simple double shot of espresso and it was the opposite of restretto, in fact it looked like a half a cup of coffee. The crema was thick, but it wasn't too full-bodied & rich. However, bottom line: it's better than Starbucks.

***Terrible Coffee handling***

A visit to a near McDonalds restaurant at wilshire/union at the home depot shopping center during morning time, the employees at McDonalds have about 10 empty coffee cups and about 10 cups (empty) for orange juice, all in front of a trash can, near the coffee area where workers serve the coffee, later the worker comes and pours the coffee to all the empty cups and the same with the orange juice (10) cups, and they wait until us the customers ask for coffee or orange juice and they give it to us from 3-4 minute standby accumulation, all of this near the trash and the cups opened, later covered. By the time we get the coffee/ or orange juice and take it to our tables, coffee is cold, and with drown fly's swimming and pieces of air small trashy feathers.

That is not appropriate according to the county of Los Angeles health department, coffee should be served upon customers request right out of the coffee pot, as well with the orange juice.

Please take a look when an employee of McDonalds picks up your coffee!

Option#1: From the accumulative coffees/ orange juices that are stand by, with pieces of fly wings or other air small trash

Option# 2 (THE BEST) Request to have your coffee served right out of the coffee pot/ or orange juice freshly served from machine.

Please observe on your next McDonalds visit!

well even if Mcdonalds have the best coffee - Starbucks still has the best cakes !!!! And i reckon a good cake makes a cup of coffee taste much better :)

Mcdonalds coffee is great for the last several years..Starbucks coffee
is horrible. I think that the people who like Starbucks coffee are followers of what they feel is hip
and they don't have the courage or taste to understand that just because
something costs a lot does not always make it better.

I agree with Tom. Starbucks or Seattle's Best (same company) is horrible and if you want to spend that much money, go to Panera Bread. Now there's a GREAT cup of coffee! But since they're not close where I work I go to McDonald's. They do have a great cup in the morning. At 3pm it's not so great. For the price it is a very good cup to start your day with. If you want the specialty stuff their new mocha lattes are pretty good too.

I drank mcdonalds coffee for the first time last night. I will admit that it was at 9:00 pm, but it was rather burnt and bitter tasting. Someone near me who was unaware what I was drinking asked what that burnt plastic smell was....

I've been a regular at starbucks for a long time and a bit of a coffee snob (for the fun not the seriousness). After trying McDonalds coffee a few times I have to say that I like it better than starbucks. I was surprised. I think its a good move by McDonalds but they need to acknowledge that the quality of their workers at most stores (primarily cities) may be a hinderance to the coffee crowd's patience.

I'm sorry but this has to be a stacked deck by Mc's i've had Mcdonalds coffee and mocha's 4 different times and every time! It taste like an ash tray. I thought I was just getting a bad server the first two times, but by the third time at three different restaurants (Spokane, Postfalls, & Rathdrum) its not a coincidence.

If you walk through the door of a mcdonalds you are a loser.

Oh Andrew, sometimes cheaper things are better. Just like Marcal makes great paper towels and Old Navy makes great layering tees, Mickey D's seems to have the market corner on a good ol cup of Joe.
Now, if you want a great cup of coffee, and are into the organic and free trade coffee that improves trade and the environment, try Larry's fair trade coffee. But in a pinch, the Golden Arches aren't that bad.

phew! good thing i only drive thru...

I really have a hard time beveling that a huge fast food company like McDonalds uses more expensive arabica rather than the cheaper robusta beans. Mcdonnald has cut corners with the quality of their products , so when they tell you its arabica your knee deep in bull shit. If you cant Handel bold Starbucks coffee then you should probably be drinking tea.

I totally agree! I love McDonald's coffee. I actually prefer it to Starbucks and other coffee house's coffees.

every morning before going to work, i make sure to sip McDonald's coffee. I simply like their authentic taste and a day doesn't go by without me sipping in on their coffee. Of course, I'm kind-of addicted to coffee but i simply love the taste :)

McDonalds has once again ruined a chance to redeem themselves by delivering watered down coffee at their Mills Ave. location in Greenville, SC near Memorial Hospital campus.

The taste-testers must have had numb tongues. Dunkin' Donuts is the #1 seller of coffee-by-the cup, the top-selling specialty coffee in supermarkets, and the #1 coffee brand in customer loyalty* (surpassing Starbucks, McDonald's, and Krispy Kreme, respectively. *Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index)

Starbucks does taste a bit bad because the surveys always choose the cheap and most bought kinds. Honestly, Starbucks does need some credit. McDonalds does not compare in everything.

Actually, some of us just really, really love STRONG coffee - and that's Starbuck's. I know u haters say it taste "burnt" but I don't get that. And I use no sugar. It certainly isn't about the money. It's about taste preference.

i guess mc donalds coffee is definately not getting enough credits for their coffee - it's for sure better than getting an instant coffee from any of those typical vending machine... AND their coffee is better than their burgers if you ask me =). still i rather brew myself a coffee using a good ol single serve. just my two cents

McDonald's coffee is indeed the best one. Sometime back me and my friends went into a coffee shop and tasted the starbucks coffee. Only then did we know how horrible it was. I'd never sip that again.

McDonald's...Absolutely the best cup of coffee ever...I have to have it every day...and I AM a coffee snob. Wish I could make it at home.

I collect and sample coffees from around the world. McDonalds move to their new coffee is one the biggest moves that they have made in recent years . Not only is it delicious, but they trump Starbucks in coffee taste who are supposed to be " specialists ". I drink McDonalds every morning!!

Well, I'm a coffe drinker, I love expressos, but last time I had an Mc D ice coffe mediun size, my head went zooming for a couple of hours, something I never felt nor even with a double coffe grind expressos. Does caffeine per se causes that? or Mcdonald is giving us something extra?
